It’s easy to suggest that the media or whoever are responsible for the eclipse of the ‘left’ parties of Europe. Irrelevant even when in power to be frank see Brown or Hollande. I am referring to New Labour here rather than whatever welcome Corbyn is destroying with random precision. This is a more general attack than on a particular party and to be honest could be used against most ‘liberal’ thinkers. It is also in the context of seeming liberals supporting a ruling ideology that forsook the poor and claimed GDP growth as Manna achieved by stoking the purchase of 2nd hand assets and the land they stood on as improved living standards. Paul Mason went on BBC Question Time made clear there are no moral or reasonable arguments for staying in the EU. Then said we should remain as UK had a right wing Govt. This is the fear and weakness of the Left writ large.
In many ways for all their high handed snobbery the Remain argument is this yes the EU is a downbound train and a technocracy that does not work for the people but it’s marginally better to support that than not for the Uk, realpolitik you might say if you were such a cunt.
The difference is however hard we can vote out those clowns. The chilling economic idiocy being imposed on Greece shows the EU generally speaking via EMU has worse ideas than even George Osborne on how to run an economy. Our Govt like the EU gladly allows car makers to kill people with NOx emissions in their 1000s both are indefensible only one can be voted against.
My point to Mason is that in terms of the EU the Uk is not an outlier but right, front and centre in line with what he wants to avoid by staying.
Essentially the position of the left neo Liberals (everyone from left of Liz Kendall to 1 step right from Corbyn) is conservative. Their whole philosophy padded with some humanitarian nonsense is that we want the world as it is just a bit different. In essence long term a Zombie Capitalism with individuals subservient to corporations, Land Owners and State [funded] entities – Osborne but lighter.
The changes they propose take the cronyism/kleptocracy/plutocracy/Oligarchy/WhateverYouCallIt world as a given and seek no more/little change with extra transfer payments. It’s why most stinging attacks on George Osborne and the Conservative Govt come from the right.
The paradox is those who the state now protects vote for this change and those against want no change. Aided by electoral systems where only 25% of people have to vote for no change for themselves. So here Pensioners, Farmers, Oil Producers, Corporate bureaucrats, State Funded companies, Arms manufacturers et al ensure the continuation of their no change lives at the expense of the wider economy and any sense of justice.
