I have a conundrum a friend pointed out if you were supporting what ‘Capitalism’ wanted then you were on the wrong side. As a lazy believer in Leftism I assume this has a lot to do with the fact that a flawed left-wing Labour leader is better than anything right wing/centre. Certainly some such as Paul Mason have been prepared to unload all in defense of what seems from the outside a clown ship.
Thus to be critical of Corbyn’s inability or even non care to get on board most of his MPs is bunk. To worry he cannot get an idea across and appears to be for want of nicer words incompetent even in a world that includes May, Lansley, Cameron and the incomparable incompetent inept George ‘Ozzy’ Osborne. I had a flashback to the 80s. I was a leftie. A Bennite. Yes sorry. Anyway you could not find a single cunt who admitted voting Tory. The Govt was beset by incompetence and treated people like garbage. Real wages began their 35 year fall and Mrs Thatcher was less popular than anyone (and more popular by some measures). Yet that 35->40% of the vote was always Tory. Indeed even in 92 Major secured the biggest vote ever in terms of numbers.
Why because people fear change? They’re not just going to vote for someone by default. It is not enough to point out how bad the Govt are. No good to say and prove they are corrupt and incompetent. It is not enough to point to the poor and dispossessed being attacked for no reason. It is not enough to be pictured in obviously ethnic settings – probably counter productive in groups Labour needs to appeal to to boot.
People vote out of fear and self interest. Labour currently makes no more appeal on offering even a better alternative than it did under Foot or Miliband or Brown or Kinnock. It’s not necessarily a left issue except in so far as the left are so smug and secure in their conceit of goodness they do not see that no one else agrees with them nor is convinced. Nor of course do they feel the need to convince anyone as buffing their own conceit is more important than affecting the lives of those they claim to represent.
In many ways the biggest weakness of the governing left party in the UK [Labour] is that it stands for conservatism. It seeks to use the context the Conservatives create and use a few transfer payments to stay in power. It challenges nothing as Brown’s attempt to spend money and feed the Financial Parasite at the same time shows. You need an alternative not a list of unfairness. A plan to change context not a recipe for Brownian self congratulation and faux horror when your largesse unwinds.
The 80s are repeating as Tragedy and Farce.
Nassim Taleb pointed out how minority tastes can come to dominate. Noting most soft drinks in America were Kosher. Or why Pizza is so prevalent. This can be seen by political systems development. Thus although a majority of US would choose many other candidates against the openly corrupt and proud of it Clinton or the preening ignorant narcissist Trump short of a 3rd party interloper that could well be the Election choice.
In England the apparent differences don’t matter where a vast majority of MPs reside in constituencies offer you a choice of a Labour party led by an un-updated 80s Socialist or a Landed and Subsidy junkie Landed Conservative party. Whilst Labour has 2 wings who don’t have a basic idea between them and sadly almost nothing between [politically and their ears]. The Conservatives have a spread of rational views but sadly the Finance and Landed gentry neo Libs are in charge. It’s all very well to believe in Freedom and Markets but how you remain a Conservative? The problem is with the cost and media hiding behind faux impartiality or outright voice of the Plutocrat no MP from Conservative or Labour will lead a breakaway. Being an MP is a sinecure and maybe they hope Corbyn lightening will strike for them?
Possibly if Corbyn stays in charge and gains in the polls finance will be available but again who or what does Labour have to split? Recycled garbage which is how Corbyn got there. They can flip from Austerity more severe than they complained about under the coalition to basically welcoming Osborne’s flips but offering nothing else. They are led by media and Govt even 4 years off an election.
Ed Miliband’s gutless or stupid or undemocratic decision not to back AV will be brutally rammed down Labour’s throat at the next election as a despised Conservative party wins with its 25% coalition of the subsidised.
Andy Burnham, who knows why and what we will find out they ‘ad on ‘im or maybe Occam’s Razor he is just a complete moron, rushed to endorse the Snooper’s Charter and raise the cost of us using the internet to gather data on us! (VPN anyone?). This and the genuine compassion for migrants and refugees may seem incongruous. What principle does it imply? What does it say to those who live and vote here?
John McDonnell also accepted Austerity even though none of his 6 economic advisers would see that as anything but stupidity. Corbyn is set on unilateralism not making the obvious case against Trident but arguing for something that is frankly Cnut like. Again what is the principle here?
The point is that policies aimed at people who do not even live in the UK or absolutist positions suits the Labour left but it will compromise on our freedom and security on the basis of dogma and ease but not that of other nation’s people! Regardless of anything else this is hardly electable.
It is hard to get across to folks but there is a reason the bar is higher for left leaning Govts in the West. It is not the media whose siren calls and clarion hatred tend to make them vulnerable to coherent argument. The reason is the world is easily upset. Thus whilst the UK economy has been butchered in many ways by 18 years of corrupt cretinism from Brown, Darling and Osborne it has not suffered worse than most. Economies are not that fragile – one reason I am less left than I once thought I was is that you can fuck up royally and Capitalism goes on regardless. This may hit a tipping point now Osborne is no longer subject to the steadier of Vince Cable of course.
The UK as a net importer who borrows off the world [in a sense] does not need a Govt who so unsettles things that the £ plummets say. We do not have a 190 military bases to get the world to pay for our consumption that say a Bernie Sanders could deploy – we could argue if he ever gets shit through a corrupt Congress and Senate but I am not a Septic and do not care.
As Greece found not being able to depreciate a currency is worse but the UK is not doing badly on growth and it is therefore not analogous. We’re in a better position when Mr Shit hits Mr Fan. We just don’t want to get there.
It is thus all very well being left but left for its own sake pointless. A potential leftist Govt needs to be honest and move very slowly this side of another serious recession at least.
It’s not to damn Corbyn but he can afford less mistakes than the continual stream of nonsense Cameron pumps out. I recall being a Socialist and thinking we had the arguments but it’s now clear most of them are whining for victims. There is not a positive policy or view just a change to tax winners and losers. An attempt to manipulate the world as given without a strategy. A series of add on tactics.
Hence you end up suggesting we build nuclear subs without nukes for the jobs. Uk does not need nuclear submarines and thus does not need the workers who would build them. If you cannot deliver that softest of hard messages then wonder why people may agree the Govt is maniacal but….
As Labour in the UK showed the definition of a left party is “the most left wing right wing party that has been about for a 100 years”. They mostly offer in UK or France or arguably the USA (more complex) the same WEF/Bilderburg diktats as the often called Conservative party does but throw the dog [the poor] a bone occasionally at least until they have to use the wealth for wars or to bale out their pals.
It’s why I oppose them. They’re a conceit. Look at Labour high handedly lauding it over the Liberals in Coalition tempering Govt policy and then voting with the Govt for the undiluted shit when the real enemy another 2nd party not in play. This Corbyn wrinkle won’t last and has even greater downside with no upside as Venezuela and Tspiras show – the whiff of incompetence the kicker.
The Left of these ‘left’ parties have nothing to offer as presently organised. They offer self righteous hypocrisy and short termism. They offer no original thinking just ritual, log held beliefs and claptrap. The Right of these parties as Hilary Benn’s disingenuous call for bombing shows are possibly worse people but less incompetent.
