Media Say Sad I Say Bull

The media will say it is sad the Bradford Bulls folded. Yet who has stood by as spivs ransacked another sporting body without a word? When the public gave half a million only for it to be written off at pennies in the £ as the spivs went into administration. I bet you could buy the club and prevent liquidation for that half a million now when debt is discounted to pennies in the £. Yet the media stood by as people were fleeced and paid off debtors and the board at £ for £ when all they could have got was pennies and the club still went into its first of 3 administrations. Can Chelsea Win The Title

Start of the season Chelsea were 11/2 and probably not even value at that. Indeed at one point Conte was favourite for the sack. Now they are odds on.

In their favour they are not wasting time in Europe and are out of the EFL cup. They have the best front 3 in Hazard and Costa with Pedro. Conte has won titles before and clearly has got the players up for it. His tactics also seem to allow Chelsea to use bit part players previously in positions they do not hurt the team like Moses, Alonso and Luiz. Is there any reason to oppose?

The issue is as with the team whose title winning run bored even fans of Mourinho is it does not have goals written all over it. When Costa and Hazard play Pedro looks dangerous but basically without Hazard he’s lightweight and can be marked easier. The wide players Alonso and Moses are not great crossers or shots. Kante and Matic does not scream goals and Fabregas seems not to be as admired these days although as against Sunderland is a threat to score a goal. Equally whereas Chelsea’s back line has had set piece box threats like Terry, Gallas, Ivanovic and Cahill now the team is small and hard to see them as a threat.

Poverty of opposition may get the title for Chelsea but odds on too short.

TUE TUE Gum Drops

The current Sky revelations on Bradley Wiggins show him up as being less than honest about his past. Yet they also reflect the common failings of those who claim to be holier than though and in many ways cut through the British schtick of fair play and gentlemanly conduct.

The journalist and determined anti influencer Paul Kimmage had already shown in an interview with Chris Froome last year that athletes were not so much anti doping as anti those who gained an advantage by going beyond the arbitrary line or rules as some call them. As said Sharapova doped her whole career yet she only became a dope cheat for 18 days and probably inadvertently. Are all sporting asthmatics dopers? Continue reading “TUE TUE Gum Drops”

Shades of Doping Grey

God I hate dopers. Cheats. Should be banned for life. No excuse for Doping. That was me until last year. Worst part it’s the dumbest position this side of anyone in the Labour Party. Why Why. Several reasons:- Continue reading “Shades of Doping Grey”

Hodgson’s Rock Scissors Issues

Whilst France showed England how to break down Iceland with even a shit centre forward England probably would not pick competing aerially the Euros did provide another example of why knock out kick ball ain’t all that. Basically 14 teams played Rock by default and 2 played scissors. How’d that work out for England and Belgium?

England were probably the worst set up with 5 small forwards many not of the ability to trap a ball quickly (yes you Daniel) nor with the aerial combativity required nor the pace to kill. Quite how England hoped to break teams down is a mystery. In qualifying despite qualms they managed 79 shots in 3 games but against the Rock of Iceland ran out of ideas by 55 minutes. Although had they even had a replacement level keeper they might have gone through. Hart managed to concede 4 goals on 6 or 7 shots? It will be interesting if the only person in football who apparently does not know Hart cannot dive left is Roy Hodgson? Statistically England had enough on expected goals to win that game too.

In fairness to judge the state of English football off 4 games or so every 2 years is preposterous. Do we want to win like Portugal? They won one game all tournament. In the end Hodgson’s ignoring of Hart, Wilshere & Sterling’s recent form probably more than tactics bit him. Bringing Milner not Vardy on at 1-0 v Russia oddly Italian thinking. Overall Hodgson’s reign has been a positive but in the end I think he over estimated his players and was blind to their weaknesses. You don’t need super players and the bar for having 1 super player never mind deploying 4 as though they were is higher. None of his squad is World 23 or even 46, 69 or 92 even?

What the continued pimping of Wilshere, Sterling and Hart, not to mention the bizarre promotion of Rashford, did show is that like the rest of the world coming up from the right schools and flowering early is valued over being a ranker like a Vardy or Deeney. They might be more functional players but hey Robson Kanu did a Cruyff! Bare in mind none of Hodgson’s 7 forwards would have had the strength to hold the defender off get the ball under control before the Cruyff. Darwinism, a narrow range of strengths in a team is a weakness in terms of progressing.

England went out after leading again! Hodgson is a good man if nothing else and since I came to hate each England manager since Ramsey (who I was too young to have an opinion of) that is a compliment of sorts. Yes even Bobby and Terry. In fact especially Terry and Bobby.

Hodgson’s Rock Scissors Issues

Roy’s Problem

England had 30 shots on goal only 5 on target. Spain in 90s or Italy in 1990 and Belgium and other teams of players have shown sometimes the ball does not go into the net. That the most likely scores in almost any game are 0,1 or 2 goals. To overly criticise England is to be a slave to small sample sizes and outcomes. What more can a manager do than set his side up to comprehensively out-shoot the opposition? On average that is what the top teams generally do.

The games have been frustrating but not the turgid grind of England teams passim.

Flat v Jumps

Contains after-timing if you’ve not read my timeline on Ervedya & Vautour and my Direct Messages on Fascinating Rock v Found. I use DM’s with pals as the level of debate often amounts that will won’t win on Twitter so discussing form is moot.

The weekend showed one reason I increasingly prefer the Flat to Jumps. I have it that the 3yo fillies last got over rated in the end because Found improved over much further. Her win in US was worthless in terms of Euro turf form & 9th in Arc and inability to lay up in Champion showed a lack of tactical speed for me. Now I could be wrong and it was a one off and Found will prove me wrong or Ervedya but that is the fun of the game.

Now over jumps even Vautour who looked totally unsuited to 2 miles, slow jumper who jumped right, on form etc nearly won a grade 1 right handed over 2 miles. He won a phony title at Cheltenham over his 2nd best trip. Only Vautour’s best trip of 3 miles is so competitive that a horse well below form stands a chance to lose. Jumps fans care for the ridiculous 10++ championship races, applauding Novice winners like they’ve actually won something & going on and on about them for years after even once they’re busted flushes. Wide margin winners are the norm not the exception.

Yes the flat has 2 year old racing which I ignore and 3 year old only which I also ignore but from June onwards it’s mostly about finding the best horse. Jumps appears to be to cheer as many easy winners as possible. Sure at present just backing Cheltenham favs yields a profit as the bookies screw racing to get accounts but if that’s your bag not sure what skill or personal enjoyment there is in that.
