Labour fans obsess with grouping and cataloging every small ethnicity in a country that is predominantly White European. Its ramifications the almost bizarre paradox where you say people are different and that should be celebrated and that some need tolerating and then say we are all equal. A group viewed as less in need of Labour patronage such is the Jewish community. The past horrors begat upon them rationalised and perspectivised whilst other ‘communities’ are excused current violent minorities, racism and misogyny. We in the West do have an enemy that would commit any crime and I mean any crime and already do many of them. That rather than isolated incidents and accidents the atrocities in Paris and Brussels reflect not the limit of their ambition but all that can be done at present. There are a lot of issues and frankly it’s the quick way to be accused of being a racist and bigot by people on the left and I am not paid for that. If you want change the best way to achieve it is to do it incrementally and as nonthreatening as possible. Hence the Leave campaigns have a higher burden of proof than Remain and they have failed. Sure the Remain campaign is largely an ad hom one with zero reasons to remain bar the obfuscation of faux consequence on GDP of leave assuming we cut trade after Leave – from people [HM Treasury] who if you do believe most economists have cost the UK far more in the last 6 years in terms of GDP. The Logic of which to me is there is no reason to Remain unless there are dire consequences and yes 6% of GDP would be dire enough if it came to pass or was even likely to. It’s not hard from a left wing perspective the EU prima facie case of has to go. Yet left response a sniveling Remain vote cos they’re frightened of change! Then they wonder why people vote Conservative and UKIP! Who offer simple narratives and kneecap poor people like it’s going out of fashion but hey it’s an ethos. Lifelong anti EU Corbyn disappears in a campaign he could have led. Look at Greece grovelling before economic sociopaths like Jeroen Dijsselbloem.
The point is whether it’s Labour under Corbyn or Tspiras or Hollande we’d be better off not bothering. The left is skeptical of everything except itself. That is a conceit.
Despite the continual idiocy of David Cameron the BrExit campaign is done. The loony ravings that somehow UK Border Patrols already in place would allow 12 Million Turks here is having less effect. Indeed it is a sign that TV news when it tries can overcome the lunatic ravings of newspapers. Before you claim that Newspapers have no effect consider this.
One other problem is whilst 37% who voted voted Tory and 14% ‘kippy whippies the Tory vote contained probably many who are not BrExiters like the rural folk who get 54% of their income in subsidy. The Tory right should be aware that winning elections by paying frightened little people who lead a subsidised life hardly going to get them to vote the other way. There may also even be a section of the ‘Kip vote which makes the sensible view they want anyone but Labour and are not ideological BrExiters.
The other factor is that the campaign is led by the most extreme free marketeers and they offer the most extreme version of leave. Now a campaign to merely stop paying so much and to step back from the anti democratic bureaucracy may not be exciting but it’s harder to make an economic argument against. Without a blueprint BrExit is a blank piece of paper to be handed to fringe idiots from the perspective of most people.
Saddest of all is Farage of course. The campaign you prepare your life for and you run a ridiculous dogwhistle campaign of racist ranting. You have no single platform just a series of random visions of the future. You’re so toxic few will share a platform with you outside a TV studio.
Most effective commentator on the reasons to leave the EU was Paul Mason and he was against at this time. I’ll vote leave but to aftertime have bet quite a lot we Remain and will enjoy the eclipse of loons like Johnson and Grayling. Sadly Farage will be here to stay.
The age where wanting to leave the EU becomes a majority is 54… It does seem pensioners and older asset rich don’t want younglings to have Pensions, EU, Welfare, Free University education, free health care etc so they can receive more welfare themselves and pass house asset to their offspring. It’s a bizarre mixture of a god complex, eugenics and an unabiding hatred of the young and poor who are not their own.
It tends to show when considering humans misanthropy is the best starting point.
Paul Mason went on BBC Question Time made clear there are no moral or reasonable arguments for staying in the EU. Then said we should remain as UK had a right wing Govt. This is the fear and weakness of the Left writ large.
In many ways for all their high handed snobbery the Remain argument is this yes the EU is a downbound train and a technocracy that does not work for the people but it’s marginally better to support that than not for the Uk, realpolitik you might say if you were such a cunt.
The difference is however hard we can vote out those clowns. The chilling economic idiocy being imposed on Greece shows the EU generally speaking via EMU has worse ideas than even George Osborne on how to run an economy. Our Govt like the EU gladly allows car makers to kill people with NOx emissions in their 1000s both are indefensible only one can be voted against.
My point to Mason is that in terms of the EU the Uk is not an outlier but right, front and centre in line with what he wants to avoid by staying.
